How to Choose the Right Chartered Accountant for Your Company in Pakistan - Selection Guide

Appointing a Chartered Accountant is often treated as a formality, something arranged quickly once the need for an audit becomes clear. This approach frequently leads to problems later, whether in the form of scope disagreements, delayed timelines or, in more serious cases, questions about whether the auditor was genuinely independent. A more deliberate approach at the appointment stage tends to prevent most of these issues.

Confirming qualification and registration

The first and most basic check is whether the individual or firm is registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and holds a valid certificate of practice. This is a legal requirement for anyone signing a statutory audit report, and it should be confirmed directly rather than assumed based on how a firm presents itself.

Checking relevant experience

Beyond basic qualification, it is worth asking whether the Chartered Accountant or firm has experience with companies of a similar size and in a similar industry. An auditor familiar with manufacturing businesses, for example, will generally move through an audit of a manufacturing company more efficiently than one whose experience lies primarily in services or trading.

Verifying independence

Independence is a legal requirement, not simply good practice. A Chartered Accountant with a financial interest in the company, a close personal relationship with its directors, or a role in preparing the company's own books cannot serve as its independent statutory auditor. Companies should ask directly about any existing relationship between the proposed auditor and the company or its directors before proceeding.

Understanding scope before agreeing to anything

An audit engagement can vary considerably in what it actually covers. Some engagements are limited strictly to the statutory audit report, while others include tax return preparation, SECP filing support, or a management letter with recommendations. Before agreeing to an engagement, the scope should be set out clearly in writing, along with the timeline and fee structure, so that both parties have the same understanding of what is included.

Asking about communication and turnaround

Audits frequently generate queries that need prompt responses from both sides. It is reasonable to ask how the Chartered Accountant typically communicates during an engagement, how quickly queries are usually raised and resolved, and what the expected turnaround time is for the specific company's size and complexity.

A note on referrals and recommendations

Recommendations from other business owners or from a corporate lawyer familiar with the company's compliance position can be useful, but they should not replace the basic verification steps above. A recommended Chartered Accountant should still be checked for registration, independence and appropriate experience before appointment.
